Holle Organic Baby Formula Stage 1 for Newborns 0 to 6 Months
Holle Organic Baby Formula Stage 1 is a Demeter biodynamic cow milk infant formula for babies from birth to 6 months. Made from organic skimmed milk with a milk base that carries Demeter certification, it is produced in Germany by a brand that has been a leader in biodynamic food since 1933. Breast milk is the best nourishment for infants, and this formula is intended for babies whose families choose or need to supplement or replace it. Consult your pediatrician before beginning or changing any infant formula.
Holle and Demeter Biodynamic Certification
Holle was founded in 1933 and is headquartered in Riehen, Switzerland. Its formulas are made in Germany under Demeter biodynamic certification, the highest standard of organic farming in Europe. Demeter requires farms to manage their land as a self-sustaining ecosystem, going well beyond the criteria of standard EU organic certification in areas like biodiversity, soil health, and animal welfare.
Stage 1 carries a Demeter share of 67 percent, with the skimmed cow milk base sourced from Demeter-certified farms. This combination of biodynamic sourcing and strict European infant formula production standards places it among the most rigorously certified newborn formulas available. See the full Holle organic baby formula collection for all available stages.
A Cow Milk Formula for Newborns to 6 Months
This Stage 1 formula is designed to serve as the complete nutrition source for babies from birth through 6 months. The milk base uses organic Demeter-certified skimmed cow milk alongside whey protein, a composition common to European cow milk infant formulas. It is not hydrolyzed, so the proteins remain intact, making it appropriate for healthy babies without a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy.
For families who want to continue with the same Holle cow milk line, the Holle Formula Stage 1 page provides additional context on how this formula fits into a longer feeding plan.
Ingredients and Nutritional Composition
The carbohydrate source is lactose only, with no maltodextrin or starch. This keeps the carbohydrate profile close to that of breast milk during the most critical early months. The vegetable oil blend includes organic palm oil alongside other organic oils. Parents who prefer a palm-oil-free option may want to explore Holle's goat milk line, which does not contain palm oil.
DHA is derived from oil from the microalgae Schizochytrium sp. ARA is present, sourced from Mortierella alpina oil. Both DHA and ARA support brain and eye development. The formula does not contain added prebiotics or probiotic cultures.
Authentic European Formula Shipped to the US
EU infant formula regulations require DHA in every infant formula and impose detailed minimum and maximum nutrient standards. Holle Organic Baby Formula Stage 1 meets these European standards and is available through Organic Formula Europe as an authentic import, shipped in sealed, unopened cans directly from Europe.
The expiration date on the can is in the European DD/MM/YYYY format. For example, 01/07/2026 means July 1, 2026. Store the can in a cool, dry place and follow the usage guidance on the label once opened.
Preparing Formula Safely
Always follow the preparation instructions printed on the can. Use freshly boiled water that has cooled to the temperature the label specifies, and prepare each bottle just before use. Powdered infant formula is not sterile. Use the measuring scoop inside the can and measure carefully, following the exact ratio stated in the instructions. Never store or reheat a prepared bottle.

How to Prepare Powdered Formula
- Boil fresh water for each feed and let it cool to the temperature printed on your can. Powdered infant formula is not sterile, so the CDC and WHO advise that water at about 158°F (70°C) lowers the risk of Cronobacter, especially for newborns and higher-risk infants. Follow your can's instructions and ask your pediatrician which approach is right for your baby.
- Pour about two-thirds of the required water into a clean, sterilized bottle.
- Use only the scoop provided with your formula pack (sizes may vary). Add the correct number of level scoops - 1 scoop per 1 oz / 30 ml of water.
- Close the bottle with the nipple and cap. Shake vigorously until all powder is dissolved.
- Add the remaining water and shake again.
- Cool to drinking temperature (approx. 98 °F / 37 °C). Always test the milk temperature before feeding to avoid scalding your baby.
Important Information
- Only use the scoop included in the package.
- Do not make feeds weaker or stronger than indicated. Do not add extra water, scoops, or other ingredients.
- Always prepare fresh. Do not prepare bottles in advance. Discard any leftovers after each feed.
- Never heat bottles in the microwave - hot spots can cause burns.
- Once opened, use formula within 21 days. Never use beyond the expiration date printed on the box/tin (format: day/month/year).
- Avoid storing formula in hot or humid environments.
