HiPP Comfort Formula for Sensitive Tummies | All Stages

HiPP Comfort Formula is a food for special medical purposes (FSMP) intended from birth for babies experiencing digestive discomfort such as colic, constipation, or gas. Because it is an FSMP, it must be used under the supervision of a pediatrician or healthcare professional. Breast milk remains the gold standard for infant nutrition, and switching to any specialized formula should always begin with a conversation with your baby's doctor.

HiPP: Over 125 Years of Family Expertise in Infant Nutrition

The Hipp family has been in infant nutrition since 1899 in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, Germany, and has more than 60 years of experience with infant formula. Four generations of the Hipp family, now led by Stefan Hipp, have kept the company independent. While many of HiPP's formulas carry EU organic certification, the Comfort line is a medically classified product and is not EU organic certified.

HiPP developed the Comfort formula specifically for infants whose digestive systems need extra support. It draws on the company's deep experience in infant nutrition while meeting the EU regulatory requirements for foods for special medical purposes.

What Is Comfort Formula and Who Is It For

HiPP Comfort is formulated for babies from birth who show signs of digestive discomfort, including excess gas, colic, or constipation. It achieves this through two key features: a reduced lactose content (the carbohydrate blend includes maltodextrin and starch alongside a lower level of lactose) and a hydrolyzed whey protein base, meaning the cow's milk whey has been broken down into smaller protein fragments that may be easier for sensitive tummies to process.

It is important to note that HiPP Comfort is not appropriate for babies with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). For CMPA, an extensively hydrolyzed or amino-acid-based formula prescribed by a doctor is required. Comfort is designed for functional digestive discomfort, not allergy management.

Ingredients and Composition

The protein source is hydrolyzed whey protein derived from cow's milk. The carbohydrate blend combines reduced lactose with maltodextrin and starch to ease the digestive load. The vegetable oil blend includes palm oil and beta-palmitate (derived from palm oil and sunflower oil). DHA is sourced from fish oil and ARA is present, sourced from Mortierella alpina oil.

HiPP Comfort does not carry an EU organic or HiPP Bio-Siegel. It is Halal-certified and classified as a food for special medical purposes (bilanzierte Diät) under EU food law. Parents looking for a standard organic option may want to explore the HiPP comfort formula collection for comparison with other digestive-support options.

Sourced in Europe, Shipped to the US

Every pack of HiPP Comfort sold through Organic Formula Europe is sourced directly from European stock and shipped to the US. You receive the authentic German-manufactured product in its original EU packaging, with the best-before date printed in the European DD/MM/YYYY format.

Specialist importers provide traceability that general retail channels cannot always match. If your child's doctor has recommended this formula, ordering through a trusted importer ensures you get the exact product that has been evaluated and approved for your baby.

Preparation and Use Under Medical Guidance

Always prepare each feed exactly as instructed on the pack. Do not alter the concentration. Powdered infant formula is not a sterile product, so follow recommended water temperature guidelines and prepare feeds fresh for each feeding session.

Because HiPP Comfort is an FSMP, the duration of use and the decision to continue or stop should be reviewed regularly with your pediatrician. If symptoms persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider. See also: baby formula for constipation for related options your doctor may want to consider.

How to Prepare Powdered Formula

  1. Boil fresh water for each feed and let it cool to the temperature printed on your can. Powdered infant formula is not sterile, so the CDC and WHO advise that water at about 158°F (70°C) lowers the risk of Cronobacter, especially for newborns and higher-risk infants. Follow your can's instructions and ask your pediatrician which approach is right for your baby.
  2. Pour about two-thirds of the required water into a clean, sterilized bottle.
  3. Use only the scoop provided with your formula pack (sizes may vary). Add the correct number of level scoops - 1 scoop per 1 oz / 30 ml of water.
  4. Close the bottle with the nipple and cap. Shake vigorously until all powder is dissolved.
  5. Add the remaining water and shake again.
  6. Cool to drinking temperature (approx. 98 °F / 37 °C). Always test the milk temperature before feeding to avoid scalding your baby.

Important Information

  1. Only use the scoop included in the package.
  2. Do not make feeds weaker or stronger than indicated. Do not add extra water, scoops, or other ingredients.
  3. Always prepare fresh. Do not prepare bottles in advance. Discard any leftovers after each feed.
  4. Never heat bottles in the microwave - hot spots can cause burns.
  5. Once opened, use formula within 21 days. Never use beyond the expiration date printed on the box/tin (format: day/month/year).
  6. Avoid storing formula in hot or humid environments.

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants. Please consult your pediatrician before introducing or changing infant formula. Infant formula is designed to meet the nutritional requirements of infants according to age. It contains carbohydrates, which are an essential part of infant nutrition. As with any carbohydrate-containing liquids, frequent or prolonged contact with the teeth may increase the risk of tooth decay. To support healthy dental habits, avoid extended bottle use and encourage transitioning to a cup when age-appropriate.

Packaging may change without notice. Always follow the preparation, storage, and feeding instructions provided on your product packaging.

What makes HiPP Comfort Formula different from regular baby formula?

HiPP Comfort is a food for special medical purposes for the dietary management of digestive discomfort such as gas, colic, and constipation, used under the supervision of a healthcare professional. Unlike standard formulas, it contains partially hydrolyzed whey protein, broken down into smaller fragments that may be easier for sensitive tummies to digest. It is not an extensively hydrolyzed formula and is not intended for babies with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. It also has a reduced lactose content and includes starch as a complementary carbohydrate.

Can I use HiPP Comfort Formula for my baby with lactose intolerance or milk protein allergy?

While HiPP Comfort Formula has a reduced lactose content, it is not suitable for babies with diagnosed lactose intolerance. Similarly, although the formula contains partially hydrolyzed protein, it is not intended for babies with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). If your baby has been diagnosed with either condition, consult your pediatrician about the right option. A diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy usually requires an extensively hydrolyzed or amino-acid-based formula prescribed by a doctor, which HiPP Comfort and HiPP HA are not. For lactose intolerance, your pediatrician can advise on a suitable low-lactose or lactose-free formula.

Is HiPP Comfort thicker than other formulas, and do I need special bottles?

HiPP Comfort contains starch as a complementary carbohydrate, but it is not a thickened anti-reflux formula and does not have a notably thicker consistency. It is prepared and fed like a standard formula, using the scoop provided and following the preparation steps on the carton, so no special faster-flow teat is needed. If you have questions about teat flow or feeding, ask your pediatrician.

Can HiPP Comfort Formula be used from birth, and should it replace my baby's regular formula completely?

HiPP Comfort can be used from birth onwards under medical supervision, either as a complete feeding solution or as a supplement to breastfeeding. However, it's important to understand that this specialty formula is designed to address specific digestive issues and should be used based on your pediatrician's recommendation. Many parents use it temporarily to help resolve digestive discomfort rather than as a permanent replacement for standard Organic Formulas.

How long does it take to see improvements in my baby's digestive issues with HiPP Comfort?

Every baby responds differently. HiPP notes on the carton that a baby should feel more comfortable after a few days; if there is no improvement, you should speak with your pediatrician again. HiPP Comfort is intended for the dietary management of digestive discomfort and contains galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), which can lead to softer stools. If you do not notice any improvement after two weeks, or if symptoms worsen, consult your pediatrician to decide whether this formula is the right choice for your baby.
