HiPP Anti Reflux Formula for Frequent Spit-Up and Reflux

HiPP Anti Reflux Formula is a specialized infant formula suitable from birth for babies who frequently spit up or show signs of reflux. It is classified as a food for special medical purposes (FSMP) and should be used only under pediatrician guidance. If you are considering this formula for your baby, please speak with your child's doctor before switching from breast milk, which remains the recommended first choice for infant nutrition.

A Family Brand with Over 125 Years of Expertise in Infant Nutrition

HiPP was founded in 1899 in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, Germany, and has been family-owned through four generations, currently led by Stefan Hipp. The company holds EU organic certification and carries its own rigorous HiPP Bio-Siegel, which sets standards beyond the EU baseline.

Because this formula is an FSMP rather than a standard infant formula, it does not carry an organic certification. HiPP developed it specifically to support babies with frequent regurgitation, applying the same commitment to ingredient quality the brand brings to its broader range.

What Is Anti Reflux Formula and Who Is It For

HiPP Anti Reflux is formulated for infants of any age from birth who experience frequent spit-up or reflux. Its defining feature is a natural thickener, locust bean gum (Johannisbrotkernmehl), derived from the carob plant, which gives the prepared feed a slightly thicker consistency that helps it stay down after feeding.

The protein base is intact, non-hydrolyzed cow's milk protein (skimmed milk and whey), so this formula is not suitable for babies with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. Parents should confirm with their pediatrician that this product is appropriate for their baby's specific situation before use.

Ingredients and Composition at a Glance

The carbohydrate in this formula is lactose, the natural sugar found in milk. There is no additional starch or maltodextrin beyond what is inherent in the dairy ingredients. The vegetable oil blend includes palm oil, and DHA is provided from fish oil. ARA is also present, sourced from Mortierella alpina oil.

The formula is Halal-certified and carries the classification of a food for special medical purposes (bilanzierte Diät) under EU food law. It does not carry an EU organic or HiPP Bio-Siegel because the FSMP regulatory pathway and organic certification are not combined for this product.

European Quality, Sourced and Shipped from Germany

HiPP Anti Reflux is manufactured in Germany to EU food safety and infant formula standards. Every can sold through Organic Formula Europe is sourced directly from European stock and shipped to the US, so you receive the authentic European product with its original EU labeling and DD/MM/YYYY date format.

Ordering from a specialist importer like Organic Formula Europe means you can verify the product's provenance and rely on cold-chain handling appropriate for powdered infant formula.

Preparation and Everyday Use

Always prepare each feed fresh using the instructions printed on the can. Powdered infant formula is not sterile, so use water that has been boiled and cooled to a safe temperature as directed. Do not prepare feeds in advance or store reconstituted formula beyond the time stated on the packaging.

Because HiPP Anti Reflux contains locust bean gum as a thickener, the prepared feed may require a teat with a slightly larger flow opening. Check with your pharmacist or healthcare provider if you are unsure which teat is appropriate.

How to Prepare Powdered Formula

  1. Boil fresh water for each feed and let it cool to the temperature printed on your can. Powdered infant formula is not sterile, so the CDC and WHO advise that water at about 158°F (70°C) lowers the risk of Cronobacter, especially for newborns and higher-risk infants. Follow your can's instructions and ask your pediatrician which approach is right for your baby.
  2. Pour about two-thirds of the required water into a clean, sterilized bottle.
  3. Use only the scoop provided with your formula pack (sizes may vary). Add the correct number of level scoops - 1 scoop per 1 oz / 30 ml of water.
  4. Close the bottle with the nipple and cap. Shake vigorously until all powder is dissolved.
  5. Add the remaining water and shake again.
  6. Cool to drinking temperature (approx. 98 °F / 37 °C). Always test the milk temperature before feeding to avoid scalding your baby.

Important Information

  1. Only use the scoop included in the package.
  2. Do not make feeds weaker or stronger than indicated. Do not add extra water, scoops, or other ingredients.
  3. Always prepare fresh. Do not prepare bottles in advance. Discard any leftovers after each feed.
  4. Never heat bottles in the microwave - hot spots can cause burns.
  5. Once opened, use formula within 21 days. Never use beyond the expiration date printed on the box/tin (format: day/month/year).
  6. Avoid storing formula in hot or humid environments.

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants. Please consult your pediatrician before introducing or changing infant formula. Infant formula is designed to meet the nutritional requirements of infants according to age. It contains carbohydrates, which are an essential part of infant nutrition. As with any carbohydrate-containing liquids, frequent or prolonged contact with the teeth may increase the risk of tooth decay. To support healthy dental habits, avoid extended bottle use and encourage transitioning to a cup when age-appropriate.

Packaging may change without notice. Always follow the preparation, storage, and feeding instructions provided on your product packaging.

How does HiPP Anti Reflux Formula help reduce spit up in my baby?

HiPP Anti Reflux contains locust bean gum, a natural thickener from the carob plant. The thicker feed is designed to stay in the stomach more easily, which helps reduce the reflux of stomach contents back into the food pipe and so lessens the frequency and amount of spit-up. It is intended for the dietary management of reflux and should be used under medical supervision. According to the manufacturer, babies should feel more comfortable after a few days rather than immediately. Individual results vary. If you are switching from a standard formula, your pediatrician can advise on the change.

Can I switch directly from regular HiPP formula to HiPP Anti Reflux?

Yes, you can switch from a regular HiPP formula to HiPP Anti Reflux, but it is important to consult your pediatrician first. They can help determine whether an anti-reflux formula is right for your baby and guide you through the transition. Some babies adjust immediately, while others may need a gradual transition over several days. Note that HiPP Anti Reflux is a food for special medical purposes, not an organic formula. It differs from standard HiPP formulas mainly through its added locust bean gum thickener and is intended for the dietary management of reflux under medical supervision.

Does HiPP Anti Reflux Formula require special preparation compared to regular formula?

Yes, HiPP Anti Reflux needs slightly different handling because of its thicker consistency. Prepare it with water at about 104°F to 122°F (40°C to 50°C) as printed on the can, since water that is too hot can affect the thickener and the natural lactic acid cultures. Add the powder, shake vigorously, and let the feed swell for about 7 minutes as the can directs, then shake again before cooling to feeding temperature (about 98°F / 37°C). Because powdered infant formula is not sterile, the CDC and WHO advise that water at about 158°F (70°C) reduces the risk of Cronobacter, especially for newborns and higher-risk infants, so ask your pediatrician which approach is right for your baby. You may also need a teat with a faster flow, since the feed is thicker than a standard formula.

Is it normal for my baby's bowel movements to change on HiPP Anti Reflux Formula?

Yes, some change in bowel movements is common when using HiPP Anti Reflux. The locust bean gum that helps reduce reflux can also affect stool consistency. When switching to HiPP Anti Reflux, some babies may have softer stools, in line with the manufacturer's guidance on the can. This is usually not a cause for concern as long as your baby shows no signs of discomfort. If symptoms do not improve, speak with your pediatrician. Used under medical supervision, the formula can provide complete nutrition, including iron and vitamins.

How long can my baby stay on HiPP Anti Reflux Formula?

As a food for special medical purposes, HiPP Anti Reflux should be used only on the advice of a healthcare professional and only for as long as needed to relieve symptoms. Under medical supervision it can serve as the sole source of nutrition from birth, and from the sixth month as part of a mixed diet. As your baby grows and the digestive system matures, reflux symptoms often improve. Your pediatrician can advise when it is appropriate to move back to a standard formula or to continue, based on your baby's individual needs and development.

My baby twins are doing really well on this anti-reflux formula. They seem more comfortable after feedings. I’m happy.
