HiPP HA Formula Stage Pre for Newborns from Birth

HiPP HA Formula Stage Pre is a German hypoallergenic starter formula for newborns from birth, featuring partially hydrolyzed whey protein to help reduce the risk of allergic sensitization in babies with a family history of allergies. It is the thinnest and earliest stage in the HiPP HA German line. This formula is not organic-certified. Before introducing any hypoallergenic formula, consulting your pediatrician is essential to confirm it is the right choice for your baby.

HiPP and the HA Philosophy

HiPP has been producing infant nutrition in Germany since 1899, now under fourth-generation ownership. The HA line sits outside HiPP's organic range because partially hydrolyzed milk protein cannot carry EU organic certification, but the formula is manufactured in Germany to the same strict production standards as HiPP's other lines.

HiPP HA Stage Pre received a 'gut' (good) rating of 1.9 from Stiftung Warentest (issue 10/2025), Germany's independent consumer testing institute, an external quality reference that gives parents additional confidence in the product.

What HA Stage Pre Is and Who It Is For

HA Stage Pre is designed for babies from birth where parents or a pediatrician have identified a family history of allergies and want to reduce the risk of allergic sensitization. The protein has been gently and partially hydrolyzed (broken down), making it less likely to trigger an immune response in at-risk infants.

It is important to understand that this is a prevention formula, not a treatment. Partially hydrolyzed formula is not appropriate for infants already diagnosed with a cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). If your baby has a confirmed CMPA or related condition, your pediatrician will guide you toward an extensively hydrolyzed or amino acid-based option instead. For families exploring the broader HiPP hypoallergenic formula range, HA Stage Pre is the earliest and thinnest starting point.

Ingredients and Composition

The protein source is partially hydrolyzed cow's milk whey. Carbohydrates come from lactose only, with no starch present, keeping the formula thin and appropriate for newborns. Organic palm oil is included as part of the vegetable oil blend. DHA is sourced from fish oil, and ARA is present, sourced from Mortierella alpina oil.

No thickener is used in HA Stage Pre. The formula is not EU organic certified. It is Halal-certified. The formula contains no soy protein.

European Standards, Shipped to the US

Organic Formula Europe ships authentic German HiPP HA Stage Pre directly from European supply chains to parents in the United States. The can you receive is the same product available in German pharmacies: sealed, within date, with the European DD/MM/YYYY best-before format on the base.

For parents moving beyond the newborn stage, HiPP HA Pre Formula is designed to be used from birth until a pediatrician advises a transition, typically to a Stage 1 HA formula. HiPP HA Stage 1 is available separately for babies from 6 months.

Preparation and Everyday Use

Prepare each feeding fresh using the feeding guide and scoop included in the can, following the water temperature instructions on the packaging. Powdered infant formula is not sterile, and correct preparation is critical to minimize the risk of bacterial contamination. Discard any unused prepared formula within the time stated on the can.

Store the sealed can in a cool, dry place. Once opened, use within 3 weeks.

How to Prepare Powdered Formula

  1. Boil fresh water for each feed and let it cool to the temperature printed on your can. Powdered infant formula is not sterile, so the CDC and WHO advise that water at about 158°F (70°C) lowers the risk of Cronobacter, especially for newborns and higher-risk infants. Follow your can's instructions and ask your pediatrician which approach is right for your baby.
  2. Pour about two-thirds of the required water into a clean, sterilized bottle.
  3. Use only the scoop provided with your formula pack (sizes may vary). Add the correct number of level scoops - 1 scoop per 1 oz / 30 ml of water.
  4. Close the bottle with the nipple and cap. Shake vigorously until all powder is dissolved.
  5. Add the remaining water and shake again.
  6. Cool to drinking temperature (approx. 98 °F / 37 °C). Always test the milk temperature before feeding to avoid scalding your baby.

Important Information

  1. Only use the scoop included in the package.
  2. Do not make feeds weaker or stronger than indicated. Do not add extra water, scoops, or other ingredients.
  3. Always prepare fresh. Do not prepare bottles in advance. Discard any leftovers after each feed.
  4. Never heat bottles in the microwave - hot spots can cause burns.
  5. Once opened, use formula within 21 days. Never use beyond the expiration date printed on the box/tin (format: day/month/year).
  6. Avoid storing formula in hot or humid environments.

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants. Please consult your pediatrician before introducing or changing infant formula. Infant formula is designed to meet the nutritional requirements of infants according to age. It contains carbohydrates, which are an essential part of infant nutrition. As with any carbohydrate-containing liquids, frequent or prolonged contact with the teeth may increase the risk of tooth decay. To support healthy dental habits, avoid extended bottle use and encourage transitioning to a cup when age-appropriate.

Packaging may change without notice. Always follow the preparation, storage, and feeding instructions provided on your product packaging.

What makes HiPP HA Stage Pre different from regular infant formula?

HiPP HA Stage Pre is specially designed for babies with sensitive tummies or those at risk of developing allergies. The key difference lies in its hydrolyzed protein structure. Through extensive hydrolyzation, the milk proteins are broken down into tiny pieces, making them less likely to trigger allergic reactions and much easier for delicate digestive systems to process. Additionally, this HiPP Hypoallergenic Formula contains prebiotics and probiotics that support your baby's gut health and strengthen their immune system naturally.

When should I choose HiPP HA Stage Pre over HiPP HA Stage 1?

Both formulas are suitable from birth, but HiPP HA Stage Pre is often the preferred choice for newborns due to its closer resemblance to breast milk. Stage Pre has a thinner consistency and slightly lower energy content, making it gentler on brand-new digestive systems. It contains 100% lactose as its carbohydrate source without any starch, allowing you to feed your baby on demand. If your little one needs more satiation or you're looking for a formula with slightly higher energy content after the first few weeks, HiPP HA Stage 1 might be a better choice.

How do I properly prepare HiPP HA Stage Pre formula?

Proper preparation is essential for your baby's safety and nutrition. Start by boiling fresh water and allowing it to cool to approximately 120°F (50°C). Pour two-thirds of the required water into a clean, sterilized bottle. Add the correct number of leveled scoops using only the measuring spoon provided in the box (1 scoop per 1oz/30ml of water). Cap the bottle and shake vigorously until the powder completely dissolves. Add the remaining water and shake again. Always cool the prepared formula to drinking temperature (about 98°F/37°C) and test it before feeding to ensure it's not too hot for your baby.

Is HiPP HA Stage Pre suitable for babies with diagnosed milk protein allergies?

While HiPP HA Stage Pre is excellent for babies with milk protein sensitivity or those at risk of developing allergies, it may not be suitable for all infants with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. The formula contains extensively hydrolyzed whey protein, which significantly reduces allergenic potential, but it's not completely protein-free. For babies with severe allergies, you should consult your pediatrician before using any Baby Formulas, as they can recommend whether this hypoallergenic option is appropriate for your little one's specific needs.

What ingredients should I expect to find in HiPP HA Stage Pre?

HiPP HA Stage Pre features carefully selected ingredients that prioritize your baby's digestive comfort and nutritional needs. The formula contains hydrolyzed whey protein, lactose as the sole carbohydrate source, organic vegetable oils, and essential vitamins and minerals required by strict European standards. It's enriched with DHA and ARA for brain and eye development, plus prebiotics and probiotics for immune support. Importantly, it's free from gluten, soy, eggs, nuts, wheat, peanuts, maltodextrin, and starch. The formula is manufactured in Germany according to stringent EU organic standards, ensuring no GMOs, steroids, pesticides, refined sugars, growth hormones, or unnecessary antibiotics.
