HiPP HA Formula Stage 1 for Newborns 0 to 6 Months

HiPP HA Formula Stage 1 is a hypoallergenic infant formula for babies from birth to 6 months, formulated with hydrolyzed whey protein from cow's milk to help reduce the risk of allergic sensitization in infants with a family history of allergy. It is not an organic formula and is not suitable as a treatment for a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. Parents should consult a pediatrician before choosing this formula, especially if there is concern about allergies. Breast milk remains the recommended first choice for all infants.

HiPP's Expertise in Infant Formula Since 1899

HiPP was founded in 1899 by Joseph and Maria Hipp in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, Germany. Over more than 125 years, the family-run company, now in its fourth generation, has built a reputation for rigorous quality control and deep expertise in infant nutrition.

The HiPP HA range is produced at HiPP's German manufacturing facilities and is widely used across Europe. While the HA line does not carry an EU organic or Demeter certification (hydrolyzed milk protein cannot currently be sourced as certified organic), it is manufactured to HiPP's own quality standards and is Halal certified.

What Is a Hypoallergenic Formula and Who Is It For

HiPP HA Stage 1 uses a hydrolyzed whey protein base. The whey proteins are broken down into smaller fragments, which may reduce the likelihood that the infant's immune system reacts to them. This approach is often called a partially hydrolyzed formula (pHF) in scientific literature and is used as an allergy-risk-reduction measure for healthy infants with a family history of atopy.

This formula is not appropriate for infants with a confirmed or suspected cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). A diagnosed CMPA requires extensively hydrolyzed or amino-acid-based formula prescribed under medical supervision. If you have concerns about your baby's reaction to cow's milk protein, speak with a pediatrician before selecting any formula. See our HiPP hypoallergenic formula and HiPP HA formula pages for more context.

Ingredients and Composition

The protein source is hydrolyzed cow's milk whey protein. The carbohydrate source is lactose (natural milk sugar), with no added starch or maltodextrin. The formula contains palm oil as part of the vegetable oil blend.

DHA is present and derived from fish oil. ARA is present via Mortierella alpina oil. GOS prebiotics (from bio-lactose) and probiotic cultures are included as part of the Combiotik composition. No thickener is present in this formula.

Imported Directly from Germany

HiPP HA Stage 1 is produced in Germany and sold across European pharmacies. Organic Formula Europe imports genuine factory-sealed cans and ships them directly to US families. The product is identical to what European families and pediatricians use, with no reformulation.

Each can carries an expiration date in European DD/MM/YYYY format. EU infant formula regulations require DHA in every infant formula sold in Europe, a standard not yet mandatory in the US market.

Preparation and Storage

Always follow the feeding and preparation instructions on the can. Prepare each bottle fresh and do not store prepared formula. Powdered infant formula is not a sterile product; CDC and WHO guidance on safe preparation temperatures is available from your healthcare provider.

If your baby is approaching 6 months and currently on Stage 1, HiPP HA Stage 2 is available to continue the same hydrolyzed protein approach through the complementary feeding phase.

How to Prepare Powdered Formula

  1. Boil fresh water for each feed and let it cool to the temperature printed on your can. Powdered infant formula is not sterile, so the CDC and WHO advise that water at about 158°F (70°C) lowers the risk of Cronobacter, especially for newborns and higher-risk infants. Follow your can's instructions and ask your pediatrician which approach is right for your baby.
  2. Pour about two-thirds of the required water into a clean, sterilized bottle.
  3. Use only the scoop provided with your formula pack (sizes may vary). Add the correct number of level scoops - 1 scoop per 1 oz / 30 ml of water.
  4. Close the bottle with the nipple and cap. Shake vigorously until all powder is dissolved.
  5. Add the remaining water and shake again.
  6. Cool to drinking temperature (approx. 98 °F / 37 °C). Always test the milk temperature before feeding to avoid scalding your baby.

Important Information

  1. Only use the scoop included in the package.
  2. Do not make feeds weaker or stronger than indicated. Do not add extra water, scoops, or other ingredients.
  3. Always prepare fresh. Do not prepare bottles in advance. Discard any leftovers after each feed.
  4. Never heat bottles in the microwave - hot spots can cause burns.
  5. Once opened, use formula within 21 days. Never use beyond the expiration date printed on the box/tin (format: day/month/year).
  6. Avoid storing formula in hot or humid environments.

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants. Please consult your pediatrician before introducing or changing infant formula. Infant formula is designed to meet the nutritional requirements of infants according to age. It contains carbohydrates, which are an essential part of infant nutrition. As with any carbohydrate-containing liquids, frequent or prolonged contact with the teeth may increase the risk of tooth decay. To support healthy dental habits, avoid extended bottle use and encourage transitioning to a cup when age-appropriate.

Packaging may change without notice. Always follow the preparation, storage, and feeding instructions provided on your product packaging.

What makes HiPP Dutch Hypoallergenic Formula Stage 1 different from regular baby formulas?

HiPP Dutch HA Stage 1 is specially designed for babies with sensitive tummies from birth to 6 months. Unlike regular formulas, it contains extensively hydrolyzed whey proteins that are broken down into smaller particles, making them much easier for your baby's delicate digestive system to process. This HiPP Hypoallergenic Formula also includes prebiotics and probiotics to support healthy gut development, plus it's completely free from soy, gluten, GMOs, and artificial additives that could trigger sensitivities.

Is HiPP Dutch HA Stage 1 suitable for babies with cow's milk protein allergy?

While HiPP Dutch HA Stage 1 features hydrolyzed proteins that are gentler on sensitive stomachs and may help reduce allergic reactions, it's important to note that this formula is made with hydrolyzed cow's milk proteins. If your baby has been diagnosed with a confirmed cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA), this formula may not be appropriate. Always consult with your pediatrician before introducing any new formula, especially if allergies are a concern. They can help determine whether this hydrolyzed formula is the right choice for your little one's specific needs.

How does HiPP Dutch HA Stage 1 compare to the German version?

Both the Dutch and German versions of HiPP HA Stage 1 share the same high-quality recipe and commitment to Organic Baby Formula from Europe. The main differences are practical ones: HiPP Dutch HA comes in larger 800g tins compared to the German 600g boxes, and the Dutch version contains slightly higher protein levels (1.8g per 100ml versus 1.3g per 100ml) to support your baby's growth and development. Both versions meet strict European organic standards and are manufactured in Germany.

Can I use HiPP Dutch HA Stage 1 alongside breastfeeding?

Absolutely! HiPP Dutch HA Stage 1 is designed to work beautifully as either a complete feeding solution or as a supplement to breastfeeding. Its gentle, hydrolyzed formula provides flexibility for your feeding routine while ensuring your baby receives all the essential nutrients needed for healthy development. The addition of prebiotics and probiotics helps mirror the beneficial components found in breast milk, supporting your baby's developing immune system and digestive health.

What ingredients should I expect to find in HiPP Dutch HA Stage 1?

HiPP Dutch HA Stage 1 contains hydrolyzed whey protein as its base, making it easier to digest than standard formulas. It includes essential vitamins A, C, and D for immune support, galacto-oligosaccharides derived from lactose, and organic lactic acid bacteria cultures for digestive health. The formula is manufactured following strict European organic standards, ensuring it's free from pesticides, steroids, growth hormones, unnecessary antibiotics, corn syrup, and refined sugars. This pure, thoughtfully crafted formula provides complete nutrition while being gentle on sensitive tummies.
