HiPP Organic Baby Formula Stage 1 for Newborns 0 to 6 Months

HiPP Organic Baby Formula Stage 1 is a German Combiotik starter formula designed for babies from birth through 6 months. Made by a family-owned company with over 125 years of farming heritage, it is certified EU organic and carries the strict HiPP Organic Seal. As with any feeding decision, consulting your pediatrician before introducing formula is always a good first step.

A Family Farm Legacy Since 1899

HiPP was founded in 1899 and has been family-run for four generations, with Stefan Hipp leading the company today from Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, Germany. Every stage of production, from the organic farms to the finished can, is held to standards that exceed standard EU organic requirements.

The milk used in Stage 1 carries the EU organic certification (DE-OKO-001) as well as the German Bio-Siegel and HiPP's own Bio-Seal, a mark that represents additional quality checks HiPP applies on top of the legal minimum. The result is a formula that parents in Germany and across Europe have trusted for decades.

Who Stage 1 Is For

Stage 1 is formulated for babies from birth and can be used as a complete source of infant nutrition in the first months; HiPP positions Stage 2 as the next step after the sixth month. It belongs to HiPP's German Combiotik line, which combines GOS (galacto-oligosaccharide) prebiotics with natural lactic acid cultures (Limosilactobacillus fermentum CECT5716). According to HiPP, these lactic acid cultures were originally derived from breast milk.

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants and the preferred first choice whenever possible. When formula is the right fit for your family, HiPP German Stage 1 offers a carefully quality-controlled, organically sourced option produced to EU infant-formula standards.

Ingredients and Composition

The protein base is organic skimmed cow's milk combined with an organic whey product, giving a whey-to-casein ratio appropriate for young infants. Carbohydrates come from lactose as the primary sugar, with a mild organic starch also present. The formula contains organic palm oil as part of the vegetable oil blend, along with other organic oils to supply essential fatty acids.

DHA is sourced from fish oil, meeting the EU's mandatory DHA requirement for infant formula. ARA is also present, sourced from Mortierella alpina oil. The Combiotik system adds GOS prebiotics and probiotic cultures to the formula. No soy protein is used. The formula is not Demeter-certified, only EU organic.

European Quality, Shipped to the US

Every can sold by Organic Formula Europe is sourced directly from European supply chains and shipped to the United States. You receive the same product sold in German pharmacies and supermarkets, unopened and within date, with the European DD/MM/YYYY expiry printed on the base of the can.

HiPP German formula is manufactured in Germany under EU food safety regulations, which set mandatory DHA levels and strict limits on pesticides and additives. This is a different regulatory environment from US-domestic formula, so reviewing the label with your pediatrician before switching is worthwhile.

Preparation and Everyday Use

Always prepare formula fresh using the feeding chart and scoop printed on the can, and follow the specific water temperature guidance on the packaging. Powdered infant formula is not sterile, so using appropriately hot water and discarding any unused prepared formula within the timeframe on the label is important for your baby's safety.

Once opened, use the contents within 3 weeks and store the sealed can in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

How to Prepare Powdered Formula

  1. Boil fresh water for each feed and let it cool to the temperature printed on your can. Powdered infant formula is not sterile, so the CDC and WHO advise that water at about 158°F (70°C) lowers the risk of Cronobacter, especially for newborns and higher-risk infants. Follow your can's instructions and ask your pediatrician which approach is right for your baby.
  2. Pour about two-thirds of the required water into a clean, sterilized bottle.
  3. Use only the scoop provided with your formula pack (sizes may vary). Add the correct number of level scoops - 1 scoop per 1 oz / 30 ml of water.
  4. Close the bottle with the nipple and cap. Shake vigorously until all powder is dissolved.
  5. Add the remaining water and shake again.
  6. Cool to drinking temperature (approx. 98 °F / 37 °C). Always test the milk temperature before feeding to avoid scalding your baby.

Important Information

  1. Only use the scoop included in the package.
  2. Do not make feeds weaker or stronger than indicated. Do not add extra water, scoops, or other ingredients.
  3. Always prepare fresh. Do not prepare bottles in advance. Discard any leftovers after each feed.
  4. Never heat bottles in the microwave - hot spots can cause burns.
  5. Once opened, use formula within 21 days. Never use beyond the expiration date printed on the box/tin (format: day/month/year).
  6. Avoid storing formula in hot or humid environments.

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants. Please consult your pediatrician before introducing or changing infant formula. Infant formula is designed to meet the nutritional requirements of infants according to age. It contains carbohydrates, which are an essential part of infant nutrition. As with any carbohydrate-containing liquids, frequent or prolonged contact with the teeth may increase the risk of tooth decay. To support healthy dental habits, avoid extended bottle use and encourage transitioning to a cup when age-appropriate.

Packaging may change without notice. Always follow the preparation, storage, and feeding instructions provided on your product packaging.

Why is HiPP Organic Baby Formula Stage 1 suitable for newborns?

HiPP Stage 1 is formulated to meet the nutritional needs of infants from birth, in line with EU infant-formula standards. It is made from organic cow's milk and provides vitamins A, C and D along with minerals such as iron and calcium. It contains GOS prebiotics and natural lactic acid cultures (Limosilactobacillus fermentum CECT5716), plus the omega-3 fatty acid DHA and the omega-6 fatty acid ARA. Lactose is the main carbohydrate; there is no added refined sugar, and the formula contains a small amount of organic starch (1.0 g per 100 ml), as listed in the ingredients and nutrition table. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants.

What makes HiPP Organic Stage 1 different from conventional formulas?

HiPP Stage 1 is produced to EU organic certification (DE-OeKO-001); EU and US organic systems are distinct certifications with different rules. In line with EU organic farming, it is produced without GMOs, synthetic pesticides, added refined sugar, growth hormones or routine antibiotics. Its ingredient list contains no wheat, soy or peanut ingredients. Please note this is a cow's-milk-based formula that also contains fish oil, so it is not suitable for infants with a cow's-milk-protein or fish allergy; always check the full ingredient list and ask your pediatrician if your baby has known allergies. This German HiPP BIO Combiotik Stage 1 is packaged in a 600 g carton that is FSC certified and about 97% recyclable, reflecting HiPP's sustainability efforts.

What prebiotics and cultures does HiPP Stage 1 contain?

HiPP Stage 1 contains GOS (galacto-oligosaccharide) prebiotics made from organic lactose, together with natural lactic acid cultures (Limosilactobacillus fermentum CECT5716). GOS is a type of prebiotic fiber, and according to HiPP the lactic acid cultures were originally derived from breast milk. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. When choosing Organic Formulas for your family, talk with your pediatrician about what these ingredients may mean for your baby.

What should I know about preparing and storing HiPP Stage 1 formula?

Each 600 g carton of HiPP Stage 1 makes approximately 4,500 ml (about 152 fl oz) of prepared formula, roughly 45 bottles of 100 ml, and includes a measuring scoop of about 4.4 g for accurate portioning. Always follow the preparation instructions on the pack, using water at the temperature printed on your carton, and ask your pediatrician if you are unsure. HiPP prints a best-before date on the base of the pack. For optimal freshness, order your formula with adequate lead time to account for shipping variables. Once opened, store the carton in a cool, dry place and use it within the period stated on the pack (about three weeks). When exploring our HiPP Formula Stage 1 collection, you'll find various options to suit your baby's needs

Can HiPP Stage 1 be used alongside breastfeeding?

Yes, HiPP Stage 1 is an excellent choice for combination feeding or as a complete alternative to breastfeeding. Its carefully balanced composition makes it suitable for babies transitioning from breast milk or for mothers who choose to supplement. The formula's design aims to complement the nutritional profile of breast milk while providing consistent, reliable nutrition. However, we always recommend consulting with your pediatrician before making any feeding decisions to ensure the best choice for your baby's unique needs. Remember that every baby is different, and what works best will depend on your individual circumstances and your baby's specific requirements.
