HiPP Anti Reflux Formula for Frequent Spit-Up and Reflux

HiPP Anti Reflux Formula is a specialized infant formula suitable from birth for babies who frequently spit up or show signs of reflux. It is classified as a food for special medical purposes (FSMP) and should be used only under pediatrician guidance. If you are considering this formula for your baby, please speak with your child's doctor before switching from breast milk, which remains the recommended first choice for infant nutrition.

A Family Brand with Over 125 Years in Organic Farming

HiPP was founded in 1899 in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, Germany, and has been family-owned through four generations, currently led by Stefan Hipp. The company holds EU organic certification and carries its own rigorous HiPP Bio-Siegel, which sets standards beyond the EU baseline.

Because this formula is an FSMP rather than a standard infant formula, it does not carry an organic certification. HiPP developed it specifically to support babies with frequent regurgitation, applying the same commitment to ingredient quality the brand brings to its broader range.

What Is Anti Reflux Formula and Who Is It For

HiPP Anti Reflux is formulated for infants of any age from birth who experience frequent spit-up or reflux. Its defining feature is a natural thickener, locust bean gum (Johannisbrotkernmehl), derived from the carob plant, which gives the prepared feed a slightly thicker consistency that helps it stay down after feeding.

The protein base is intact, non-hydrolyzed cow's milk protein (skimmed milk and whey), so this formula is not suitable for babies with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. Parents should confirm with their pediatrician that this product is appropriate for their baby's specific situation before use.

Ingredients and Composition at a Glance

The carbohydrate in this formula is lactose, the natural sugar found in milk. There is no additional starch or maltodextrin beyond what is inherent in the dairy ingredients. The vegetable oil blend includes organic palm oil, and DHA is provided from fish oil. ARA is also present, sourced from Mortierella alpina oil.

The formula is Halal-certified and carries the classification of a food for special medical purposes (bilanzierte Diät) under EU food law. It does not carry an EU organic or HiPP Bio-Siegel because the FSMP regulatory pathway and organic certification are not combined for this product.

European Quality, Sourced and Shipped from Germany

HiPP Anti Reflux is manufactured in Germany to EU food safety and infant formula standards. Every can sold through Organic Formula Europe is sourced directly from European stock and shipped to the US, so you receive the authentic European product with its original EU labeling and DD/MM/YYYY date format.

Ordering from a specialist importer like Organic Formula Europe means you can verify the product's provenance and rely on cold-chain handling appropriate for powdered infant formula.

Preparation and Everyday Use

Always prepare each feed fresh using the instructions printed on the can. Powdered infant formula is not sterile, so use water that has been boiled and cooled to a safe temperature as directed. Do not prepare feeds in advance or store reconstituted formula beyond the time stated on the packaging.

Because HiPP Anti Reflux contains locust bean gum as a thickener, the prepared feed may require a teat with a slightly larger flow opening. Check with your pharmacist or healthcare provider if you are unsure which teat is appropriate.

How to Prepare Powdered Formula

  1. Boil fresh water for each feed. Let it cool down to about 120 °F (50 °C) before mixing with the formula.
  2. Pour about two-thirds of the required water into a clean, sterilized bottle.
  3. Use only the scoop provided with your formula pack (sizes may vary). Add the correct number of level scoops - 1 scoop per 1 oz / 30 ml of water.
  4. Close the bottle with the nipple and cap. Shake vigorously until all powder is dissolved.
  5. Add the remaining water and shake again.
  6. Cool to drinking temperature (approx. 98 °F / 37 °C). Always test the milk temperature before feeding to avoid scalding your baby.

Important Information

  1. Only use the scoop included in the package.
  2. Do not make feeds weaker or stronger than indicated. Do not add extra water, scoops, or other ingredients.
  3. Always prepare fresh. Do not prepare bottles in advance. Discard any leftovers after each feed.
  4. Never heat bottles in the microwave - hot spots can cause burns.
  5. Once opened, use formula within 21 days. Never use beyond the expiration date printed on the box/tin (format: day/month/year).
  6. Avoid storing formula in hot or humid environments.

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants. Please consult your pediatrician before introducing or changing infant formula. Infant formula is designed to meet the nutritional requirements of infants according to age. It contains carbohydrates, which are an essential part of infant nutrition. As with any carbohydrate-containing liquids, frequent or prolonged contact with the teeth may increase the risk of tooth decay. To support healthy dental habits, avoid extended bottle use and encourage transitioning to a cup when age-appropriate.

Packaging may change without notice. Always follow the preparation, storage, and feeding instructions provided on your product packaging.

How does HiPP Anti Reflux Formula help reduce spit up in my baby?

HiPP Anti Reflux Formula contains natural carob bean gum as a thickening agent, which helps the formula stay down in your baby's stomach better than regular formula. This special consistency makes it harder for stomach contents to come back up, reducing the frequency and amount of spit up. The thicker texture provides comfort during and after feeding, helping your little one keep more nutrition down. Many parents notice improvement within the first few feedings when switching from standard Organic Formulas to this specialized option.

Can I switch directly from regular HiPP formula to HiPP Anti Reflux?

Yes, you can switch from regular HiPP formula to HiPP Anti Reflux, but it's important to consult with your pediatrician first. They can help determine if reflux formula is right for your baby and guide you through the transition process. Some babies adjust immediately, while others may need a gradual transition over several days. The good news is that HiPP Anti Reflux maintains the same high quality organic ingredients and nutritional profile as other HiPP formulas, just with added thickening properties.

Does HiPP Anti Reflux Formula require special preparation compared to regular formula?

Yes, HiPP Anti Reflux Formula does need slightly different preparation due to its thicker consistency. Use water that has been boiled and cooled to no warmer than 104°F (40°C), as hotter water can affect the thickening properties. Add the powder to the water and shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds, then let the bottle sit for a minute or two to fully dissolve. This extra step prevents clumping and ensures smooth mixing. You may also need bottles with faster flow nipples since the formula for sensitive tummies is thicker than standard options.

Is it normal for my baby's bowel movements to change on HiPP Anti Reflux Formula?

Yes, it's completely normal to notice changes in your baby's bowel movements when using HiPP Anti Reflux Formula. The carob bean gum that helps reduce reflux can also affect stool consistency and frequency. Some babies may have slightly firmer stools or go less frequently than on regular formula. This is typically not a cause for concern as long as your baby isn't showing signs of discomfort or constipation. The formula still provides complete nutrition with added iron and all essential vitamins your growing baby needs.

How long can my baby stay on HiPP Anti Reflux Formula?

HiPP Anti Reflux Formula is safe for long term daily use from birth through 12 months, providing complete nutrition while managing reflux symptoms. Many babies use it as their primary formula throughout their first year without any issues. As your baby grows and their digestive system matures, reflux symptoms often improve naturally. Your pediatrician can help you determine when it might be appropriate to transition back to regular formula or continue with Anti Reflux based on your baby's individual needs and development.
